At BigImprov, we believe improv works best when everyone feels welcome, safe and heard.
We’re proud to be part of Bradford’s creative community and we want our workshops and shows to reflect the diversity of the city we live in.
Our commitment.
Everyone is welcome, whatever your background, identity or experience level.
We treat each other with respect, kindness and curiosity.
We don’t tolerate discrimination, harassment or bullying.
We’re always open to feedback about access and inclusion.
We aim to use venues that are physically accessible and comfortable for all.
If something goes wrong.
If you ever experience or witness behaviour that feels uncomfortable or discriminatory, please tell one of the organisers in person or email:
We’ll listen, take it seriously, and handle it with care and confidentiality.
Legal framework.
We follow the Equality Act 2010, which protects people from discrimination based on age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
Improvising responsibly
We encourage scenes and stories that are bold, funny and human — not ones that rely on stereotypes or mockery.
Improv is about trust, consent and imagination, and we’ll always prioritise a safe and supportive space for creativity.
This policy will be reviewed annually. Last review 16th October 2025.
Health and Safety Policy and Procedures
Statement of Intent
BigImprov is a voluntary community group that provides a supportive and creative environment for people to take part in improvisational theatre.
We are committed to ensuring, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare of everyone involved in our activities — including participants, volunteers, audiences, and members of the public.
We aim to:
Prevent accidents, injuries, and incidents of ill health.
Maintain safe and accessible spaces for our activities.
Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation appropriate to our scale and nature.
Foster a culture of care, responsibility, and inclusion.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility
The BigImprov Coordinator (or designated committee) holds overall responsibility for implementing this policy.
The Coordinator ensures that all activities are properly planned and risk assessed.
Volunteers and facilitators
Must take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others.
Must follow safety guidance and report any hazards, incidents, or concerns to the Coordinator.
Are responsible for familiarising themselves with venue emergency procedures (fire exits, first aid, etc.).
Participants and audience members
Are expected to behave responsibly and follow any safety instructions provided by facilitators or venue staff.
Are encouraged to report unsafe conditions or incidents immediately.
Risk Management
We conduct informal or written risk assessments for all regular sessions and public performances. These cover:
The condition of the space (flooring, lighting, exits, ventilation).
Trip and slip hazards (bags, cables, props, drinks).
Safe movement during improv activities (no rough physical play, no lifting).
Fire safety and evacuation routes.
Accessibility and inclusion (ensuring participants can join safely).
Emotional safety and consent in improv games.
COVID-19 or infectious disease precautions, as relevant.
Risk assessments are reviewed annually or when venues/activities change.
First Aid and Emergencies
BigImprov ensures that at least one volunteer or venue staff member present knows where to find first aid facilities and emergency exits.
The location of first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and emergency contacts is checked at the start of each session.
Accidents or incidents are recorded in an incident log and reviewed to prevent recurrence.
In an emergency, 999 is called and the Coordinator (or their delegate) takes charge until emergency services arrive.
Venue and Equipment Safety
BigImprov uses venues that are suitable, insured, and meet legal safety standards.
We rely on the venue’s own fire, electrical, and general safety measures but conduct our own visual checks before use.
Props and portable equipment (e.g. speakers, cables) are kept in good condition and used safely.
Any damage or defects are reported to the venue immediately.
Review and Communication
This policy is reviewed annually or after any incident.
A copy is available to all volunteers, participants, and venues on request.
Updates are communicated at team meetings and via group communications.
This policy will be reviewed annually and after incidents. Last review 23rd October 2025.
